Look for sentences that say too little

A sentence can be grammatically correct and still feel generic. When a line sounds too polished, ask whether it names a specific subject, action, and consequence. If it only gestures toward importance or complexity, it needs more substance.

Replace broad verbs with precise actions

Words such as demonstrates, highlights, and emphasizes are useful, but they can become empty when overused. Try naming the actual analytical action: compares, limits, contradicts, extends, reframes, or qualifies.

Add context from the source

Specificity often comes from evidence. Add the method, example, data point, quotation, or concept that makes the sentence belong to your paper rather than any paper on the topic.

Keep the sentence readable

The goal is not to make every sentence longer. The goal is to make each sentence earn its place. A short, precise sentence is usually better than a smooth sentence that could appear in any essay.
