Questions to Ask Before Using AI on an Assignment
Before using AI support, students should check the policy, purpose, and authorship boundaries of the assignment.
Is assistance allowed?
Start with the course policy. Some assignments allow brainstorming or grammar support, while others require the entire process to be unaided. If the policy is unclear, ask the instructor before using assistance.
What is the assignment testing?
If the task is designed to assess your ability to analyze a source, generate a thesis, or practice a method, outsourcing that step undermines the purpose of the assignment. Use support only where it does not replace the skill being assessed.
Can I explain the final work?
Before submitting, make sure you can explain the argument, structure, source choices, and revisions. If a section feels unfamiliar, rewrite it until it reflects your understanding.
Should I disclose the support?
When disclosure is required, be specific and concise. Explain the role of assistance rather than making a vague statement. Clear documentation protects both the student and the integrity of the work.
