Why Formal Academic Prose Can Look AI-Written
Formal style, repeated terminology, and polished sentence structure can sometimes resemble machine-generated writing patterns.
Academic style is intentionally predictable
Academic prose often values consistency. A research paper repeats key terms, uses cautious claims, and follows a recognizable structure. These qualities help readers follow the argument, but they can also make the writing appear statistically uniform.
Editing can smooth out natural variation
After several rounds of revision, a student may remove awkward phrasing, shorten digressions, and standardize transitions. The result can be stronger writing, but it may also lose some of the unevenness that makes early drafts feel obviously human.
Specificity matters
One way to keep formal writing from becoming generic is to add concrete reasoning. Explain why a source matters, show how evidence supports a claim, and include the small analytical moves that only the writer can make. Specificity is more useful than adding mistakes or making prose artificially casual.
Do not make writing worse to look human
Students should not add typos or weaken grammar to avoid suspicion. The better approach is to preserve drafts, use examples from the actual research, and make the argument more personally accountable.
